    Brandon J. Weichert interview

@jolyonTrump has declared the U.S. will strike Iran severely, yet Tehran is issuing a stark warning that any American attack now faces a response dozens of times greater. This marks an extremely dangerous shift in the rules of the war where Tehran intends to decide where escalation ends rather than leaving that choice to Washington. The latest U.S. military action targeted rocket launchers on Larak Island, which CENTCOM stated were preparing to deploy sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Instead of a proportional reply, Iran responded to the limited strike with a larger barrage of missiles and drones against U.S. positions. Earlier in the conflict, Iranian officials calibrated their responses based on hopes for a deal with Washington, but that calculation appears to be gone. Tehran now believes the U.S. has lost escalation dominance from the start of the war. Iran is willing to escalate harder than it is hit to prove this fundamental shift in power dynamics. Trump faces a brutal dilemma: failing to respond undermines his threats while responding triggers further Iranian escalation. If he does not act after promising to hit them hard, Tehran can claim American threats have lost their force. But if he strikes back, Tehran is explicitly threatening to escalate even more. The most dangerous assumption would be believing the U.S. still gets to decide where the escalation ends because Iran is telling him it has a say in that.
