    Brown Fish Owl Ketupa zeylonensis

@anderson_joshuaIf you ever find yourself in South Asia or Southeast Asia, you might run into the Brown Fish Owl, scientifically known as Ketupa zeylonensis. This isn't just any bird; it is a large, nocturnal predator that has made its home across these regions, often spotted near rivers, lakes, marshes, streams, and even rice fields. Its range is quite extensive, stretching from lowlands all the way up to the Himalayan foothills. What makes this owl stand out immediately are those distinctive ear tufts, piercing yellow eyes, and plumage that is mottled brown. It is a common resident species, meaning you don't have to trek deep into wilderness to encounter it. When it comes to hunting, the strategy varies; sometimes it swoops down from a perch with deadly precision, while other times it wades directly through shallow water to catch its meal. The diet is heavily focused on aquatic life like fish, frogs, and crabs, but it is not picky, it will also eat reptiles, insects, small mammals, birds, and occasionally carrion if the opportunity arises. There is a clear size difference between the sexes, with males being smaller than females. You will likely hear them before you see them, producing deep, echoing hoots, shrieks, and higher-pitched calls that carry through the night. While they are primarily active at night, their schedule isn't rigid; they can also be seen moving around at dawn, dusk, or even during the day.

A large owl with striking yellow eyes is perched on a mossy tree branch. Its dark brown and white patterned feathers are detailed, and it faces directly towards the camera. The background is a soft, out-of-focus green, creating a natural and serene mood. The owl's intense gaze is particularly notable.
