Ireland athletes urge Israel boycott

More than 160 Irish athletes have signed an open letter asking the men's national team to boycott its upcoming Nations League matches against Israel. The names on it stretch across sports: boxers, rugby players, Olympians, former footballers, and people from other disciplines too. Their reasoning ties back to how they view what's happening in Gaza. The fixtures are set for September 27, Israel vs. Ireland in Debrecen, and October 4, Ireland vs. Israel in Bačka Topola. Neither will be played at home. Both are neutral-venue games. Back in July the FAI already put it to a vote: 75 in favor of playing, 32 against, 3 abstentions. With this letter, the push is back on, and whether those two matches actually happen is the open question.
