Lebanese Muslim Association on adhan

The stance here isn't about conquest but presence. A representative from the Lebanese Muslim Association makes it clear: allow the adhan (call to prayer) and we will leave you alone. If you do not allow it, you will have to fight. This challenges the idea that Islam was spread solely by the sword, pointing instead to historical context where returning the call signals acceptance of faith, leading to the group leaving. Without that return, there are two options: fighting or paying a tax for protection.

It's not that we've conquered, it's to say we are here. If you reply, return the call to prayer back to us, then that's an assumption on our behalf that you've accepted the faith and then we leave you alone. If you don't return the call to prayer, then you've got two choices. You either fight or you give a tax and then you're under our protection. So again, there's a lot of misconceptions about not only the call to prayer, but again, the idea that Islam was somehow spread by the sword and nothing else but the sword. But you just have to look through history.
