James Christoph IN THE TRENCHES EP. 78
yazan Freddenver: Crypto
The conversation lands on why James Christoph feels the traditional equity space has lost its edge, leading him to admit his portfolio is basically just SPY with a tiny slice left for speculative punts. He draws a sharp line between that boring landscape and the crypto markets he discovered years ago, where inefficiencies were so thick you could make an advantage without being particularly smart. Even though major assets have tightened up since then, he insists the game isn't dead and opportunities still exist if you know how to spot them. The real play comes from hunting down asymmetry when sentiment hits rock bottom, like during Black Thursday in the middle of the COVID pandemic. That was the kind of moment where waking up and seeing prices crash made you want to throw up, yet it was also the perfect time to be long a ton of crypto while everyone else panicked. It turns out holding through those negative sentiment waves can generate some of the most money you've ever seen.

I think like I will say like I'm I don't really think I have much if any edge in the traditional equity space like if you looked at my portfolio now it's quite boring right like I would say 90% of my portfolio is literally just spy and then I keep like a 10% you know allocation to stuff that I want to punt around on to kind of scratch that itch I think crypto back when I initially discovered it there was just so much more edge you could have on it and there was a lot more inefficiencies in it. Not because I was particularly smart, I think. But I think crypto offered back then, and it still does to a degree, but less so in majors, tremendous asymmetry when you can really kind of pick your spots. So here's just an example. Some of the most money I've ever made was just during COVID, waking up and looking at the price on Black Thursday and just wanting to throw up. I was unlevered going into that and had a lot of cash, but still was long, a ton of crypto, that is probably like sentiment wise, a very good time that you think, okay, like if the world's not going to end, here's a great opportunity to buy assets. So I think half the battle with crypto is like finding when to pick your battles and be very comfortable doing nothing. There was most recently, there was like the Iran tweet from Trump talking about
