Chainsmoker Cat

Yani Satou lives in a Tokyo apartment that smells of stale smoke and despair. A catgirl with a severe nicotine addiction, she spends her days hunting for cigarettes while her rent remains unpaid. The manga Chainsmoker Cat, serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine since February 2023, follows her struggle to survive in the city's underbelly without relying on traditional slice-of-life tropes. Creator NyanNyanFactory depicts urban decay through a raw, sketch-like art style that emphasizes the grit of withdrawal symptoms and financial ruin.

The narrative expands beyond Yani to include an eromanga artist friend and a perverted landlord, all navigating a life defined by desperation. While the series began as a comedy, it evolved into a dark noir exploration of substance abuse by late 2026. Critics noted its unflinching portrayal of addiction, with The Hindu calling it a "purrverse cornucopia of indignities" that handles heavy themes with more nuance than many prestige dramas.

An anime adaptation produced by Bibury Animation Studios premiered on July 7, 2026, airing until September of that year. The show became a breakout hit on Netflix but faced immediate regulatory scrutiny. Japan's Broadcasting Ethics Watchdog launched an investigation in August 2026 regarding drug use depictions, and Taiwan's Health Minister stated the series violated tobacco advertising rules. The series concluded with a special music video on Crunchyroll, leaving Yani to face the consequences of her lifestyle choices without a tidy resolution. [düzenle]
